Man who helped capture escaped prisoner given praise, money FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) —
A homeless man who helped capture an escaped prisoner is to receive $2,500 from the National Police Defense Foundation today. That’s on top of the $3,500 he was presented yesterday from two different organizations at the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Mark Spradley picked up Michael Mazza in his car and drove around with him for two hours on Wednesday before realizing he was wanted for allegedly shooting a deputy earlier in the day. He then alerted authorities.
Sheriff Al Lamberti called Spradley a hero. Mazza was being transported to a court appearance when he allegedly shot 76-year-old deputy Paul Rein.
