Homeless Voice Expands Cold Weather Outreach

Sean Cononie, stated, "We put out more outreach vehicles and teams of workers than we have ever done for the current cold weather warnings." Ten crews went out and covered most of Broward County and a little of North Dade. Cononie added, "At a time of us taking 80 percent of our vendors off the streets from selling our paper because it was so cold the outreach became very expensive." Each night of outreach and bringing the homeless back to our shelters cost an additional $3100.00 per night. According to Cononie, "There are times you have to spend money when it is not budgeted for the protection of human life and we will get blessed one way or another and somehow the money will come back in to us for the next emergency"

Homeless Voice vaccinate homeless against H1N1

By Rich Phillips, CNN

Fort Lauderdale, Florida (CNN) -- Sean Cononie bounded out of the back of an ambulance ahead of most of the other volunteers. A bullhorn in his hand, he was, in a sense, the pied piper.

"If there's anybody out here, that wants the swine flu vaccine, please come over here," he said.

And come they did.

Robert Kelso winced as the needle entered his arm. The injection lasted a second, but he still felt the sting minutes later.

"It's been a long time since I've had a shot," he said.

A recovering drug addict, Kelso, 33, has avoided needles for three years, saying his days of shooting up are the reason he now lives on the streets.
