WSVN-7 Homeless Hate Crime Bill Signing
Today the Govenor of Florida, Charlie Crist, signed the bill to include "Homeless" in the hate crimes statute. Broward County was #1 for hate crimes toward the homless for the past 3 years. Teens were mostly involved in these crimes. Hopefully, changes toward how our children look at the homeless will now change. Who is to blame? especially when it is illegal to feed the homeless in most cities.
Slain Davie woman who helped homeless was 'kind-hearted,' her family says
When Jill Dornbush learned her nephew needed a place to live, she didn't hesitate to let him travel from New York to stay with her in her apartment.
It didn't matter that the Davie woman didn't have a close relationship with her nephew, Alex Dornbush. She let him stay for several months in 1993.
"She put me up and helped me out," said Alex Dornbush, 36, of Vancouver Island, Canada. "She'd help out anyone."
Homeless hate crime bill passes Senate
A bill adding the homeless to the state's hate crime law is headed to Gov. Charlie Crist after the Senate's passed it 25-10 Tuesday morning.
The bill was triggered by a 2006 spree of attacks by three Broward teens who beat homeless men for sport. The teens beat one sleeping homeless man to death with a baseball beat.
One of the non-fatal beatings was captured on video tape and gained national attention.
The Senate took up HB 11 sponsored by Rep. Ari Porth, D-Coral Springs.
Episode #4
The Homeless Voice of South Florida's Medical Outreach Team hits the streets to vaccinate the homeless for the swine flu virus.
Norovirus strikes at least 80 Broward County residents at three sites
POMPANO BEACH - A flu being blamed on the norovirus has felled at least 80 people in Broward County this week, following a recent outbreak in Palm Beach County.
A Pompano Beach retirement community and two Hollywood homeless shelters are reporting scores of people complaining of stomach and intestinal distress, attacks that can last for up to 48 hours.
At the 64-acre John Knox Village on Southwest Sixth Street in Pompano, about 20 residents and less than a dozen staffers were stricken this week.
Episode #3
More and more teens are finding themselves in jail for beating and killing the homeless. Where do they learn this from? We believe it is from the laws of our cities. Why can't we feed the homeless in certain counties? Is it teaching our children that the homeless are bad people and not deserving enough for even food?
No one can answer these questions, but we are the ones that teach our children. It is up to us to teach them to Love and Help mankind, no matter what the person's social status is.
Blessed are the poor in spirit:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
